From time to time, it is important to us as Star Wars fans to journey outside of our little “Unlimited” corner of a galaxy far, far away. When this happens, we like to review other products, games, television, movies, or what-have-yous with a relation to our favorite Epic Saga of Space Wizards and Laser Swords.
We’ve all heard it said: “Come to the Dark Side. We have cookies!” That meme has become manifest with the new Star Wars OREO Limited Edition cookies. In my younger days I was definitely an Oreo connoisseur. However, lately, I’ve had to cut back. But duty calls, and duty requires me to eat cookies!
This version of OREOs comes in a very nice looking package showing the usual Star Wars suspects. The cookies themselves are either light side (blue creme) or dark side (red creme). The cookies also have small, crunchy “Kyber Crystals”, which are just clusters of sugar. Finally, what OREO tie-in would be complete without the standard special cookie designs. This product boasts 20 different faces on your cookies.
I opened my pack and found out that yes, indeed, the Dark Side does have cookies. For my taste test I went with coffee as my dunking medium of choice (there was no blue milk to be found). The OREOs taste like, well, OREOs. The Kyber Crystals add a small grindy bit of texture that I actually really enjoyed. Dunking them in the coffee for a few seconds did not destabilize the cookie at all. I wonder if the sugar bits in the creme somehow helped, or if it’s just the facial structure of Sir Alec Guinness or Darth Vader that kept it together?
Look: I’m a sucker for tie-ins of all stripes. If you smoosh together one of my favorite universes in Star Wars with one of my favorite mass-produced bad for you snacks, I’m going to enjoy it. These are pretty tasty. And they are out now (for a limited time, I would presume). Unlike other snacks, they don’t leave too much of a stain on your hands so playing SWU while dunking a few won’t be an issue. Just don’t spill the milk!
STAR WARS™ OREO Cookies, Special Edition, 10.68 oz are made my Nabisco, and have an MSRP of $4.49 in the United States. Do not pay more than MSRP if the store you are shopping at is out of stock. Also, do not scream at Nabisco about how they always do this, or that they are secretly selling fewer cookies to drive up demand on the secondary market. Just enjoy some junk food.
