With the first round of official previews for Shadows of the Galaxy (SOTG) products we have a bit more insight to who some of our set two leaders will be. I thought it might be fun to try to see if we can at least speculate what aspects they’ll end up in!
From our first preview of SOTG we know that Mando and Moff Gideon will be duking it out in the two player starter set. I think it’s pretty safe to put Mando here into Cunning and Gideon with Command, which would also help balance out the starter leaders with Luke and Vader being Vigilance and Aggression last time. Without too much to go off of as far as abilities go it would be fun to see Mando have some kind of bounty related effect, maybe attacking with a unit and if they survive the defender becomes exhausted. Gideon could have some kind of play a unit or look for a unit ability, something like searching the top of the deck for a Dark Trooper and putting it into your hand.
Like with Gideon and Mando, I feel like the aspects are pretty easy to lock down for these two so the real speculation fun comes with trying to think up what kind of gameplay styles they could bring to the table. Starting with Kylo I feel like there’s a good chance he’ll have some sort of direct damage ability but maybe one not as simple as Vader’s 1 and 1. Maybe dealing damage to his own base or to a friendly unit to give them a damage bonus and once deployed he has something centered around the Overwhelm keyword. Rey on the other hand could have something dealing with shields, a passive giving a buff to shielded units might be interesting and maybe like we’ve seen with Iden she could deploy shielded to start with the buff right away.
Who We Might See
Baylan Skoll | Vigilance / Villainy
There’s probably a good chance with Set 2 being based on some of the more recent Star Wars shows that’s we’d see a couple of brand new characters make an appearance as leaders in the set. While we don’t really know much about him, Baylan Skoll definitely stands out among some of the newer Star Wars characters, largely helped by a great performance from the late Ray Stevenson. Probably the hardest of the four I’ve chosen here to make a guess about their leader ability but I’m leaning towards something related to debuffing enemy units.
Hunter | Command / Heroism
Like a couple on this list, Hunter feels almost all but confirmed since they’ve already announced that Bad Batch will make an appearance in Shadows of the Galaxy. I jumped around between putting him in Command or Cunning but given he commands a squad I guess that’s a pretty solid reason to stick him in green. I wonder if he’ll be somewhat similar to Hera Syndulla: Spectre Two, being able to play Bad Batch cards without worrying about aspect penalty or even some kind of direct buff to bad batch units would be cool too.
Poe Dameron | Aggression / Heroism
I went back and forth with a lot of different Sequel trilogy characters to guess for this list but had trouble deciding on what aspect felt right for certain ones but the one I could easily settle on was Poe and Aggression. Ignoring anyone’s opinion’s on the sequel trilogy I feel like at the very least it’s agreed upon how much people liked our three main heroes and I’d be pretty shocked if we don’t see Poe and Finn alongside Rey as leaders for Shadows of the Galaxy. With Poe’s signature ship Black One having the ability to discard your hand and draw three cards I’m curious if Poe would have some kind of discard/draw synergy with it, maybe pitching cards for an additional bonus when attacking and letting Black One help fill your hand back up after a big swing.
Cad Bane | Cunning / Villainy
Another pick I’m pretty confident about given the theme of Shadows of the Galaxy. Everyone’s favorite blue bounty hunter showed up in both Bad Batch and Book of Boba so I think he’s a pretty safe guess even if it would make just as much sense to save him for the Clone Wars focused set 3. As far as abilities goes I’m wondering if given all the quick draw scenes he gets in the shows if he might be the first leader that deploys with ambush or something that lets him attack in the same action.
As we eagerly await the unveiling of “Shadows of the Galaxy”, SWU stands poised for an influx of new leaders. Each one has the potential to redefine strategies and shake up everyone’s decks. Stay with SWU Harvest for more news and speculation as we get closer to the release of the next set.
